Event Description

Diversity and inclusivity in the leadership of our nation’s businesses, politics, and major institutions require that diverse populations have access to the pipelines that feed leadership positions.  Many who rise to top positions in life were set on such a path by the schools they attended in their early life.  If we can provide children from underrepresented groups similar advantages, diversity in all echelons of our society could be achieved.  The race for diversity is a fundraising effort to pay for scholarships and financial aid for socioeconomically and racially diverse children attend a progressive independent K-8 school that can put them on the path for greater success in life.  Rather than waiting to introduce opportunities later in life, this can help such children during their formative years establish a foundation in education that can carry them beyond what may have otherwise been possible.

About the Run

Organized in cooperation with TangerOutlets #TangerMiles and Pacers, the race will be a timed 10k run that will touch Maryland, DC, and Virginia.  Starting out from the parking lot of TangerOutlets National Harbor heading down the National Harbor trail toward the Wilson Bridge.  Runners will cross the scenic Wilson Bridge and in so doing cross both the DC and Virgina borders making this a complete DMV run.  Taking place in the mid-Fall on October 20th, this race will provide a perfect opportunity for DC area runners to tune up before a late fall marathon.  For those not able to complete the full 10k, there will be a clearly marked course for those who wish to turn around for a 5k distance.  Packet pickup will be available the day before at the Burgundy Farm Fall Fair.

Sponsorship Opportunities

All cash donations are tax deductible.  Sponsors will have the opportunity to receive a table at the Burgundy Fall Fair where runners will pick up race packets, can post signage, and receive prominent promotional positioning on race materials including logos included on race tee shirts.  Additional cross-promotional activities can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.  As a timed race in peak running season, this race stands to attract target demographic groups that are aligned with many key consumer categories for your business.

About the Organization

Burgundy Farm Country Day School is a one-of-a-kind 501(c)(3) status, independent school for students age 4 through grade 8. We believe children learn best in an inclusive, creative, and nurturing environment that engages the whole child.  Burgundy’s mission is to prepare the “whole child for the whole world,” which means embracing diversity and ensuring that all community members know they are welcomed, respected, and appreciated.  Burgundy was founded in 1946 by a group of parents united by their vision of a small, cooperatively owned school serving an ethnically, racially, and economically diverse student body.  The founders chose an ideal setting for their school near Alexandria on a dairy farm with 25 rolling, partially wooded acres. In 1950, Burgundy actively recruited and enrolled African American students and became the first integrated school in Virginia.  Shortly afterward as a bold statement in that period of racial segregation Burgundy built a swimming pool so that little black and white children could swim together there on campus even if no where else in the state of Virginia.  In 1967, Burgundy expanded its environmental focus by establishing a wildlife studies center in the mountains of West Virginia, giving students a second expansive campus to explore the wonders of the natural world and environmental science in great depth.  To this day, BFCDS is devoted to the mission of diversity.
