Event Description

There's no better time to take action and support racial equality, so join us in being the change.

On the anniversary of when Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. gave his "I Had A Dream" speech, the We Hart Racial Equality Virtual 5K will begin. This event is a fundraiser held by Women in Sport and Recreation Management, a student organization within the Hart School at James Madison University. All proceeds from the event will be given to the Hart School's Foundation account with the ultimate goal of endowing a scholarship for underrepresented undergraduate and graduate students studying Sport and Recreation Management at JMU.

The concept of a virtual event is similar to a classic road race. The only difference is that participants can run/walk/roll the 3.1-mile distance on your own at any time and in any place from August 28 - September 7, 2020. All participants will receive a race t-shirt and virtual bib. Plus, there's also an option to purchase a medal.

WHY?
Underrepresented students face a disproportionate number of challenges in higher education. For example, according to the United Negro College Fund, barriers to graduating from college for some Black students is evidenced by the relatively low retention rates of Black students across the nation. Among students enrolled in four-year public institutions, 45.9% of Black students complete their degrees in six years - the lowest rate compared to other races and ethnicities. Additionally, only 29% of Black students feel financially secure at non-historically Black colleges and universities.

Together, we are stronger.
