Event Description

Welcome to this year's re-imagined "Create Your Own" Ocean Commotion!

Instead of 150 participants on one day, this year you and your 11,000+ fellow MMoME supporters can celebrate the daily activities of healthy harbor seals throughout the month of October. And unlike most years, you don't even have to be in Maine to participate in this event!

Our target this year is 72: the average number of kilometers a harbor seal can swim on any given day. We challenge you or your team to travel a seal’s daily route by logging at least 72 km (45 miles) of activity throughout the month of October—by hiking, jogging, walking, biking, or even swimming or paddling! Feeling ambitious? Go farther and we'll add on to our community tally of distance traveled.

Sign up for this free activity here, then log your daily distance by activity, and at the end of October we’ll tally how many seals’ daily journeys we’ve matched.

You can also participate in this event without breaking a sweat—just hop over to our donation page! For every $72 you donate or raise by crowdfunding, you’ll earn one chance to win a raffle prize in our November 6 drawing. Prizes include:

  • In-person (up to four people) or virtual inclusion in a private seal release
  • Naming rights for the first 2021 resident seal in MMoME’s rehab facility **
  • FaceTime with MMoME during a seal feeding session
  • A symbolic harbor seal adoption (we're giving away six of these!)

If you have a second home or family in Maine, used to live here, enjoy traveling our coast, or even just really like seals and other marine mammals, this is your chance to help support the well-being of the creatures that are such an integral part of coastal Maine's unique character.

Why is this important?

Our Ocean Commotion 5K is one of our biggest fundraisers each year, and coronavirus guidelines have forced us not only to find a creative alternative, but also to adjust the way we operate as an organization.

Due to the closure of a significant seal rescue and rehab resource, MMoME is now one of only two marine mammal rehab centers in the northeast and the only marine mammal triage center on the East Coast. And seal rehab isn’t our only undertaking; we also respond to encounters with whales, sea turtles, and other marine mammals, and round out our work by educating the community and visitors about all of these special animals.

Fewer volunteers in the response rotation and a doubled capacity for treating seals in need means more stress on our human and financial resources—so we need your help now more than ever to fill the financial gap the cancellation of our traditional 5K creates.

How do you tally kilometers?

It’s easy! Just take the number of miles you’ve logged and multiply by 1.6. And when you log your distance on this site, we'll even do the math for you!
