Event Description

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Sept.11th terrorist attacks. Although we are not quite ready to be back in person for our memorial 5k we
hope you can participate in our virtual event and help us remember and honor Captain DeConto and all those who lost their lives on 9/11.

Our virtual event will take place over eight days starting on 9/11/2021 and ending on 9/18/2021. You can walk or run on any of these days on the 5k course of your choice. This is a self-timed event. Registered participants will receive a link and instructions for submitting their finish times.

All proceeds and donations benefit the Captain Gerald F. DeConto Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Through your generosity the Captain Gerald F. DeConto Memorial Scholarship Fund supports Sandwich High School seniors and helps us remember and honor Captain DeConto.  We have been proudly awarding scholarships since 2002 and truly appreciate your support.

Race & Scholarship Fund History:
Captain DeConto grew up on Cape Cod where most people still refer to him simply as “Jerry”. Jerry was a dedicated Naval officer who was respected
and admired by those he served for, by those he served with, and by those who served for him. At the time of the terrorist attack on the Pentagon
Jerry was in charge of the Navy Command Center and was in direct communication with the Secretary of the Navy coordinating the Navy’s response
to the attacks on the World Trade Center. Jerry was a high-spirited, caring person who truly loved life, his friends and his family. He enjoyed many
activities, one of which was running, and he enjoyed them most when they were shared with family and friends. The scholarship fund was set up in
his memory to honor him and the legacy he left behind which is one of service to his country, leadership, friendship, and love of life and family. It is
his family’s hope that through the scholarship fund, Jerry will continue to influence the lives of young people and that his memory and the ideals he
believed in will live on.
