Event Description

Join us for our inaugural annual 5K run/walk and a 1 mile fun walk on Sunday, November 13 at West High School. The ladies of St. George Greek Orthodox Church Philoptochos Society will be sponsoring the Friend of the Poor 5K with proceeds benefiting children & youth mental health services provided by the McNabb Center in Knoxville, TN. This is a family friendly event and also a timed qualifying event; therefore we hope EVERYONE will join us in this worthwhile, fun time benefiting a great cause. See you at 3 PM for a great race day! Check-in begins at 1 PM at West High School on race day.

Philoptochos, also known as the Greek Orthodox Philoptochos Ladies Society, was established in the US in 1931, with our local chapter being established in 1946. The Knoxville Philoptochos has consistently dedicated its efforts to supporting the local community as well as contributing on a national and international level. The name ‘philoptochos’ literally translates to “friend of the poor,” hence our race name, but more importantly this is reflected in the programs undertaken by our group which benefit the poor, sick, elderly and needy. Not only does this translate into financial resources but also resources for the poor in spirit, health, companionship and whatever is needed to lead a fulfilling life. Philoptochos is the largest Christian women’s philanthropic organization in the United States. For more information see saintgeorgeknoxville.com/philoptochos/
