Event Description

The Canicross USA New Mexico Fat Ass Races are the first, premier and only canicross races in New Mexico with more races to come in the future! We intend to host these fatass races annually and keep them FREE. They are held in association with Canicross USA and qualify for titling with North American Canicross. You are welcome to participate with one or two dogs per race or as a dog lover without a dog.

If you register and decide not to run, please cancel your registration!!! The races are capped at a total of 25 human participants, and we hope to see them fill up. Contact the race directors at canixnm@gmail.com with any questions or communications.

Trail & Canine Safety
It is understood that participating dogs will have varying energy and socialization levels. However, it is expected that your dog(s) be kept under control at all times. The race directors will not hesitate to require a human participant to withdraw from the races if they believe that participant's dog(s) are a risk to other participants. For the safety of all humans and dogs, the following is expected from every participant:

  • Minimum equipment to race with a dog is a buckle or martingale collar and leash. Choke and pinch collars are not allowed. Equipment prescribed in section 2.3 of the North American Canicross Handbook (free motion harness, bungee leash and hands-free waist belt) is encouraged and it is required to qualify for North American Canicross titles. Links to several equipment vendors are found at a featured post at the Canicross USA - New Mexico Facebook page.
  • Dogs may not "meet" each other without express permission from all parties involved.
  • Single Track Passing - All passes must be announced by the passer within 20 feet (approximately 3 leash lengths) of passing on single track when one or both parties are human/dog(s) teams. Passers and passees are expected to maintain safe distance until a pass can be completed safely. Passees are expected to move to the side of a single track and stop to allow the passer to pass when safe to do so.
  • Double Track Passing - Announcing passes by the passer is encouraged within 20 feet of passing on double track when one or both parties are human/dog(s) teams. Races are started on double track and it recognized announcing passes within the first 1K of a race are difficult due to their frequency. Regardless, a passer is expected to maintain safe distance from a passee until a pass can be completed safely.

Schedule
Saturday, October 22, 7:00am - 7:45am Runner Check-in

Courses & Timing
All races will start and end at the parking lot at the west entrance of Forest Loop Rd (aka Placitas Trailhead). Each course starts on double track and finishes on single track. Each course includes rocky sections so trail running shoes are recommended. Flagging, reflective tape and cones will be used to mark each course. Following are links to each of the courses:

Sprint Class - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/133019469
5-10K Class - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/129243278
Champion Class - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/129243921

All three races will be timed, but bibs will not have timing chips. It is your responsibility to make sure timing volunteers record your bib number and time correctly. Call out your bib number as you cross the finish line.

Aid Stations
An aid station will be located at the start/finish. It will have water. This will be a “cupless” event, so bring your own preferred drink vessels (bottles, bladders, cups, etc.) and electrolyte mix. Since this is a fat ass, all participants should plan on providing their own food and we encourage participants to bring a post race snack to share. Also, plan on an informal afterparty at Kaktus Brewing or Bosque Brewing in Bernalillo.

Crews
Participants can have crews and supporters at the start and finish aid station.

Race Swag
We'll have some, but remember this is a free race. We do plan on awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd for male and female classes for each race. Everyone will receive a finishers certificate by email.
