Event Description

Race History

Run for the Hungry was created in 2002 by Michael London, then founder and CEO of PureFitness Athletic Clubs in San Diego. His vision was to have a premier event on Thanksgiving Day in Downtown San Diego that would benefit people who face hunger in the community. All profits from this race are donated to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and hunger-relief programs such as the JFS Food Mobile and HandUp Food Pantry managed by Jewish Family Service of San Diego.

The event started as a 5k race at Seaport Village. It grew by leaps and bounds over the following years, and moved to Petco Park to accommodate the growing number of participants.

The extended 10k course has presented challenges with trolley crossings and rerouting traffic, but the San Diego Police Department has done an outstanding job providing officers on a holiday to keep race participants safe. Most recently, the event was moved to the front of Horton Plaza mall at Broadway Circle.

Dogs Welcome!

Want your furry companion to join you Thanksgiving morning for a brisk, morning walk or run? Register them! It costs $12, which includes a one-of-a-kind Run for the Hungry bandana for Sparky to wear throughout the race.

Hunger in San Diego

Of San Diego County’s 3.1 million residents, 462,269 people live in poverty – that’s 15.1% of the population of San Diego County.* Of this number, 137,084 are children. These individuals face “food insecurity” which means that little or no food is available at home and often they will not know how they will get their next meal.

Be a Hunger Hero and get involved in hunger-relief. You can donate food, money or time.
