Event Description

The Marathon of the Legends Team Relay starts at 7:30 a.m., Sunday, August 26, 2018, at Sixth and Main Street in downtown Walsenburg at Miner's Plaza. Teams ranging from two members up to 11 (the marathon distance is divided into 11 legs) can split the 26.2 miles in any way they choose, running a single leg or as many as 10 (even alternating legs, for example). The first leg is 3.7 miles, the middle legs are all 2.1 miles, and the final leg is 3.6 miles.

Alternatively, teams of two to five walkers will complete a TEN MILE WALK Relay Event beginning at 8 a.m. at Black Diamond Park, located at 1 Black Diamond Drive at U.S. Highway 160, approximately two miles west of Walsenburg. The walking event takes place at the same location where the middle legs of the marathon relay race take place. The registration fee is the same for both races on the same course with the exception that the final walking leg will be a modified and abbreviated "lap" of the course. The TEN MILE WALK begins and ends at the Black Diamond Park Sales Office.

This is the fourth year for the race and after the third year explosion of popularity a few tweaks have been made to build on last year's success. Team captains will register for the full team with a flat fee of $55 regardless of the team size and receive up to the allotted 11 race bibs for each team member who signs in before running. (Consequently, the per person cost is smaller the larger the team, with the fee for a team of 11 being $5 per person.) An added incentive for residents of Huerfano, Las Animas, and Colfax County in New Mexico is that each participant earns 5 bonus points in the ongoing "RaBa Cinco" individual and team competition, an initiative of LiveWell Huerfano, a nonprofit organization devoted to active living and healthy eating. (See cocorelays.net for RaBa Cinco information.)

Another change is to encourage youth participation. Teams with a majority of runners ages 10-14 will compete for the Youth Division championship. Individual runners age 10-14 will be limited to running no more than three legs of the race. Therefore, a team comprised exclusively of youth must have at least four team members. Team captains are responsible for identifying youth division teams to race officials in advance of the race and preferably prior to the day of the race. (See contact information provided at cocorelays.net.)

Detailed course information is available at cocorelays.net. The race begins at Miner's Plaza, 6th and Main in Walsenburg. Runners head west to Hendren Street and go north to Second Street, turning left (westward). After running for approximately one mile to this point, Second Street becomes County Road 599 where the bordering bike path will be used to reach Black Diamond Park. A left turn through the north gateway onto Black Diamond Drive, reveals the picturesque Spanish Peaks to the south. After reaching the relay exchange point at the Sales Office building (after a total of 3.7 miles) the team's leadoff runner can either "tag" the 2nd leg runner or continue to run the 2nd leg over the paved roads of Black Diamond Park which has the character of a beautiful sunflower adorned nature trail like setting. Race legs 2 through 10 are 2.1 miles each with all relay exchanges taking place at the location adjacent to the Sales Office. The final leg of the Marathon of the Legends essentially retraces the first leg, however, back in town, the anchor leg runner will turn left from Hendren to an eastbound finish on Fourth Street, just short of Main Street.

After celebrating the team's finish and receiving finish leg medals, teams will walk two blocks south back to Miner's Plaza where the awards ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. (Individual medals will have been awarded as each runner completes their running for the event at the BDP Sales Office.)  At minimum, the top 3 relay teams will receive awards in addition to an award to the Youth Division champion.

Important notes: 1) Proceeds for this event benefit Downtown Walsenburg Revitalization (WDRC). 2) If you have problems assembling a team, feel free to contact the race organizer who will gladly assist in matching you with others who are seeking a team for this exciting event.
