Event Description

It is estimated that more than 300,000 babies are born with severe forms of hemoglobinopathies worldwide each year. While 75
percent of all patients with SCD live in Sub-Saharan Africa. Nigeria alone accounts for more than 100,000 new births every
year.  In America, 1 in every 365 African Americans are living with sickle cell anemia and 1 in 13 children are born with the sickle cell trait.

UIU CINCY is interested in
Teaming up with community organizations, businesses, members and leaders to bring awareness to Sickle Cell Anemia prevention, treatment and available resources. We want to begin an initiative that starts in Cincinnati, but continues in Nigeria. Our goal is to respond to basic health needs in both communities.
