Event Description

That's right, we're holding our favorite ride of the year, the Solana Beach Train Ride!  We'll leave the Irvine Amtrak Train Station, do some climbing, and then ride down the coast to Solana Beach.  After enjoying some of the best pizza you will ever eat and a beverage of your choice, you'll put your bike on a U-Haul and board a train (Amtrak Train #785 departing at 4:36pm) for the ride back up to Irvine.

Due to changes in security proceedures that will require in-person registering well in advance for access to Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton we WILL NOT be riding through the base but instead we will use the 5-freeway shoulder bike lane.

The route is 61 miles and starts from the Amtrak Station and takes us down through San Juan Capistrano before taking you to San Clemente and on to Solana Beach.  If you have ridden about 40 miles and done some climbing, this ride offers the perfect opportunity to increase your mileage, ride some absolutely great roads and increase your training level and overall level of fitness.  If you are wondering if you are ready for this ride, please contact us at leaders@teamoccycling.org and we'll be happy to discuss it with you.

You MUST REGISTER for this ride via EventBright, please note you can only purchase one ticket at a time as each person must agree to the liability waiver.  This is our MOST popular ride of the year and space is limited.  Registration fee is $30 which goes toward the rental of the U-Haul and incidentals required to put on the event.  $30 fee does NOT cover the cost of your pizza or the train fare.  Pizza and train details will only be provided to ticket holders.  DO NOT WAIT TO REGISTER!  We anticipate a packed registration.  We will not be wait listing anyone!  We limit the number of riders based upon bike shipping UHaul capacity so do not miss out on this great riding opportunity!

This is both an official OCRA training ride and an AIDS/LifeCycle special event. We will be abiding by ALL traffic laws and by ALL OCRA and ALC rules.  You must be present and you be ready-to-roll BEFORE the last safety speech.  First safety speech is scheduled to start at 6:45 with the last safety speech is at 7:30 am.  If you have not attended a safety speech prior to route closing you will not be permitted to particpate offically in this ride.  Refunds will not be provided under any circumstances.

This is a fully supported ride with sweep vehicles and food stops. It is imperative and a requirement that each rider also bring along the standard following items:

  • Bike
  • Helmet
  • Spare tire tubes
  • Water bottles (1 with water and another with your favorite eloctrolyte replacement drink) or camel back
  • Munchies to snack on during the ride (in case you need it) - food and water will be supplied at all rest stops however should you need something between rest stops please always have something on you (Gu or Blocks etc.)
