Sickle Cell is the most commonly inherited blood disorder in the United States, affecting 1 to 3 million Americans each year. Why is this number significant? Because of their abnormal or sickle-shaped hemoglobin limiting the amount of oxygen transported throughout the body, those with the disease are affected in a number of ways including shortness of breath, severe responses to changes in temperature, severe pain, organ damage and in the worst case, death.
No one should have to suffer this fate alone or without proper support and the Kier’s Hope Foundation aims to provide just that. The Kier’s Hope Foundation is an organization devoted to providing just what our name suggests; hope for patients with Sickle Cell. Comedian, public figure on the nationally-syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show and Sickle Cell Warrior himself, Kier “Junior” Spates otherwise known as “Junior – Your Favorite Play Cousin”, founded the Kier’s Hope Foundation to provide fellow patients suffering from the disease with the support they need because of his first-hand experience and the need he saw for proper support. Through events and donations, we strive to do our best to ensure these patients are equipped with the tools to live a full and comfortable life despite their disease, and our “Sickle Cell 5K Run and Fun Walk”.
On June 1, 2019, the Kier’s Hope Foundation will be hosting our 2nd Annual - 2019 “Sickle Cell 5K Run and Fun Walk”. These events will help raise funds for our Annual Christmas Drive, KH Scholarship program, Health Fair and raise awareness of Sickle Cell in the community. It is of paramount importance that these patients receive the care they need as they are still valuable members of our society, capable of making their mark on the world and should not be denied that opportunity.
