Event Description

Congrats on such a big step in achieving an amazing goal that not many people in the world accomplish! After signing up and committing to a 26.2 mile race, training is the next step and we at PGRC think you have come to the right place. Our group and expert coaches will prepare you to reach your marathon goals, healthy and happy! The PGRC Marathon Training Group will meet three times a week from July to October, learning about long runs, tempo runs, track workouts, easy runs, recovery runs, hydration, injury prevention, and much more.  This year we are adding the option to train for an Ultra (50K), for those who are interested in that distance.

Participant Information: PGRC’s Marathon Training program is intended for first time marathoners, intermediate and advanced runners training for upcoming Fall marathons: Marine Corps, Chicago, Philadelphia to name a few. First time marathoners are welcome and as such, there are certain minimum essentials required to be successful:

Minimum Base Mileage: To safely meet your goal, we do ask that you have a base level of running under your belt before joining this group. What does that mean? We ask that you are able to run/walk 8-10 miles at one time at the start of the program and are currently running at least 15- 20 miles per week. This does not mean you need to be able to run the entire way but just that you are comfortable covering that distance.

Minimum Pace: You must be able to maintain 16 minutes or a faster pace of constant running or walking/running.   We will include a walk/run (Galloway style) training option with a 1:1 interval, so there is a pace for all to succeed in this program.

Duration: The PGRC Full Marathon program runs about 15 weeks from July 16th through October 22nd.  The first training run will be Saturday, July 16th.

Date, times, location: Groups will meet Saturday mornings 5:30 am sharp in Bowie (locations will be announced one week ahead of time to participants). Tuesday evenings runs will take place at the James A. Kehoe track on the campus of the University of Maryland in College Park at 6:30 p.m. Thursday runs will take place at Wells Ice Rink in College park at 6:30 pm. The first session starts on July 16th and will include program orientation and a 10-mile run.

Registration/Cost: Registration is open until  – July 30th. The cost for the marathon training program is $85, which includes snacks, water, and a  marathon training t-shirt. Don’t delay your registration as spaces will fill up quickly. There will be no refunds or waiting lists.

Coach: Yvonne Hill, RRCA Certified Running Coach.
