Event Description

24th Annual 5K Run/Walk for Shelter Virtual Edition:  October 1-31, 2020

While we are sad we won’t be able to get together in person for our annual 5K Run/Walk for Shelter, we are hopeful you will join us in spirit for a Virtual 5K as we share the important message that domestic violence has no place in our community!  We are opening our race up for the entire month of October in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

As a virtual 5K, you can complete your run anywhere and anytime during the month of October.  You can run our course, pick your favorite course, walk around the neighborhood or even step up on the treadmill.  Your pace, your time.  The possibilities are endless!  Once you’ve completed your run, you’ll have the option to submit your time by text, email, or through your RunSignUp profile.  We ask that you send us your results no later than October 31. Results will be posted on our website and social media accounts on what would have been our actual race day on November 7, 2020.

We want to see your run! Part of the fun on race day is seeing everyone's favorite 5K Shelter t-shirts so this year we are asking you to send us a photo of you in yours while on your run for our 5K Virtual Photo Collage. You can send us photos by email or text during your run and of your chosen course. Be sure to include the location of where your running if you’ve chosen one other than our usual downtown course. If posting to social media, please use the hashtag #SHE5KV20.

WHY WE RUN

We run to show survivors that our community cares about them, to be a part of the solution in ending domestic violence, in memory of loved ones lost, and for local survivors like Beth*.

Beth met her boyfriend just as she was leaving foster care.  They moved in together shortly after.  She said the verbal abuse started early in their relationship, but she had grown up in tough environments and it didn't bother her.  The abuse got worse over time.  At seven months pregnant, she was scared but had no idea where she could go if she left her boyfriend.  One evening she was seriously injured by his beating - a neighbor heard the fight and called the police.  Her abuser was arrested and the officer put Beth in touch with the Shelter for Help in Emergency.  She stayed in our emergency services program and working with a Shelter advocate was able to find housing and parenting support through a local church.
*Name has been changed. The Shelter for Help in Emergency takes confidentiality of our clients seriously, and while these facts are real, this story is blended from experiences of several clients for anonymity.

WHO WE ARE

Since 1979, the Shelter for Help in Emergency has worked to support and empower victims of domestic/intimate partner violence through a combination of trauma-informed residential and community-based outreach services, including a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, safety planning, information and referral, resource assistance, legal advocacy and court accompaniment, supportive counseling, outreach to the Spanish-speaking community, and programs for children and youth.

The Shelter for Help in Emergency provides strong, well-established programs and services that respond to the needs of our whole community. While some clients need the benefit of services within our safe, confidential residential facility, others are able to access the services they need at our Community Outreach Center or in other community-based sites. Over the years we have worked to become a resource to the whole community – a place where people can get information about domestic violence and learn ways in which they can get involved.
