Event Description

The Fleis Nightfall Frolic 5k Run, Walk and Youth Race is an event to spread health awareness by encouraging everyone to get out, start exercising and begin a healthier lifestyle.  All proceeds will go to benefit the John Fleis Youth Scholarship Fund which provides financial assistance to families in the Onalaska community to participate in the Park and Rec Programs

John Fleis Graduated from La Crosse Central and then from UW-La Crosse.  In 1945 he became a teacher and high school coach in the Madison area.  In 1959 he quit teaching and moved back to Onalaska and started his own Insurance Agency.  His love for sports and coaching led him to start the Onalaska Park and Recreation Program in the early 1960's.  With many unpaid volunteers, tennis, basketball, baseball and golf were some of the inital programs they were able to offer.  After a few years of running the program, the City of Onalaska toook the program over adn hired their first director.  Upon John's death in 2009, the family established the John Fleis Youth Scholarship fund for Onalaska Park and Rec to provide financial assistance for families of the community to participate in Park and Rec programs.
