Event Description

The Hapeville Exchange Club has been serving the City of Hapeville and surrounding areas since 1946.  It is one of 660 local Exchange Clubs (20,000 members) across the country whose mission is inspiring communities to be better places to live. Child Abuse Prevention is a major focus of Exchange, and the plight of Homeless K-12 students in schools serving Hapeville area youth is a clear and present example of child abuse.  The Hapeville Exchange Club works with  Fulton County School System social workers to use every penny of the money raised by the 5K Run/Walk to help homeless students have "enough" to function at school.    April is Child Abuse Prevention Month for Exchange clubs across the country.  Having our 5K Run/Walk as the opening event of the City of Hapeville's Spring Festival on April 18, 2020, is an opportunity for the club to raise awareness of Child Abuse Prevention needs while raising money to alleviate one form of Child Abuse - Homelessness!

The Exchange Club of Hapeville is partnering with StandUp For Kids-Atlanta that has been serving homeless and at-risk youth since 2003 with programs that address the challenges facing homeless kids on the streets and in the schools through prevention. Education is the first step in breaking the cycle of homelessness. StandUp For Kids has a volunteer-based mentor program focused on keeping kids in school and graduating. During the 2018-2019 school-year, 91% of students in the mentor program reached this goal, in comparison to a statewide average of 60% for homeless students.

The 5K Run/Walk course begins on Claire Drive near the ball fields and and ends at the Tom E. Morris Sports Complex, which extends through neighborhoods and the city's business center. The course is gently rolling to flat, and the event will be managed by the Hapeville Exchange Club with assistance from the Hapeville Police and Fire departments.
