Event Description
The Old PA Turnpike commonly referred to as the “Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike” opened in 1940 and was billed as the “World’s Greatest Highway.” This 13-mile stretch of the turnpike became “abandoned” in 1968 when the Sideling Hill & Rays Hill Tunnels were bypassed due to traffic delays. The Old PA Turnpike was prominently featured in the 2009 post-apocalyptic movie “The Road” starring Viggo Mortensen. This unique attraction is a must-see destination in Pennsylvania.
