Event Description

SAAO is proud to announce the first annual “Move Your Bones” October Virtual Wellness Challenge! This event is a “COVID continuation” of our Skeleton 5k Dash that we did last year. The Skeleton Dash was an amazing event, with tons of community involvement, learning, & fun. Thank you if you participated last year!

This year because of COVID we had to get creative in order to plan another great event that would achieve our goals of building community centered around the pursuit of holistic health, spreading awareness about Osteopathic Manual Medicine,  and fundraising for OSU-COM's SAAO club. The result? Move Your Bones. A wellness challenge in the month of October that is designed to do all those things, here are the 5 components of Move Your Bones!

1. Be healthy!  - This event includes challenges to run, bike, swim, practice OMM, hike, (and more!) as much as possible during the month of October. Sometimes when the weather gets cooler, we stop moving ... & let's be real COVID 2020 hasn't always kept us super active (until now!)

2. Challenge yourself. - During the month you can participate in as many different types of activities as you want! Get out of your comfort zone and try something that you don't normally do for fitness.  PLUS the winners for each activity will be based solely on the amount of minutes completed, it's all about effort. Anyone can win :)

3. Support SAAO :) - Proceeds from the event will help us to raise funds for our local chapter so that we can plan great events, keep our local membership dues as low as possible, and send representatives from our club to the American Academy of Osteopathy Convocation.

4.  ~Win Prizes~ Every challenge winner (most minutes completed) in all activities will receive a prize! (Possible prizes include but are not limited to... gift cards from QT, Amazon, Siggi's Yogurt, EVOLVE meal prep, & DICK's, smoothies from 918 nutrition and more!) The OSUCOM student that wins most minutes of OMM outside of class will win a full OMT treatment and...

ALL OSUCOM students that participate will be entered into a raffle to win 1 of 3 possible OMM tables!

5. Give back <3- Osteopathic medical care considers the whole person as a single unit, including mind, body, & spirit. This principle extends both to our patients and to those we encounter in our community, especially those that do not always experience the care that they need. To help support our extended Tulsa community, Move Your Bones will also incorporate a SOCKTOBER drive. For every registration SAAO will donate a pair of socks to those experiencing homelessness in Tulsa (to be distributed via the City Lights Foundation of Oklahoma). And for every additional $5 dollars that we raise in simple donations we will donate another pair.

What more could you want from a wellness challenge?!

We hope that you will join us this month and Move Your Bones in October! We wish that we could do an in person event, but the major bright side to our online challenge is that because it's virtual, it is open not only to people who live in Tulsa, but also throughout the world where our extended OSU medicine family lives. Please invite your family and friends to participate!

More about OMM & Osteopathic Medicine & SAAO

One of the core principles of Osteopathic Medicine is the idea that the body is one unit including body, mind, and spirit, and therefore a holistic approach must be employed in order to provide optimum patient care. One of the unique ways that osteopathic physicians are able to incorporate these principles is through the practice of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, or OMM. OMM is a compilation of techniques, that work to restore the body’s innate healing capabilities. Although applicable in many different disciplines, OMM is particularly notable for its capabilities in restoring somatic dysfunctions and pain reduction. Osteopathic physicians are able to use their hands as tools when treating patients, potentially providing a service, in addition to medication, that increases patients’ quality of life. SAAO is linked uniquely in this mission at OSU- COM because it is the student club that is dedicated to learning and promoting OMM.
