Event Description
2020 marks the 7th year hosting Montclair Bread Co's annual 5K Doughnut Run. The race has come a long way since the first 125 participants congregated in the park to run for doughnuts...back when the shirts were handed out at the finish line!!! This year, the doughnut run is taking on a new life as a virtual race.
We know you've probably signed up for a slew of virtual events this year and you're probably ready to retire the word 'virtual' all together (we can put it in the drawer with 'pivot' for a while). So what makes the 2020 5K Doughnut Run different? Why should you sign up for ANOTHER virtual event?
In March, we truly didn't know if Montclair Bread Company would be able to continue serving customers. We listened to the governor's announcements every day as he issued more and more closing rules. Thankfully, we serve food and we were able to continue operating as an essential business. Due to the new rules, we were forced to lay off 60% of our team. We kept getting up in the morning, putting one foot in front of the other and baking another day to provide nourishment for our community when the grocery stores offered nothing but empty shelves.
Although our retail business remains intact, we've suffered great losses this year. Our Fueled by Doughnuts running club was paused indefinitely. We lost our bRUNch Race and our June Branchbrook Park 5K Doughnut Run. We lost our entire catering business as weddings, baby showers, graduation parties and birthday celebrations ceased to exist. Our Friday night live music series was canceled along with our summer baking camp. To say it's been tough is the understatement of the year but we are surviving!!! We are taking each day as it comes and making the most of it.
When you register for this virtual race, you are helping to keep Montclair Bread Co alive. You are helping to keep the Fueled by Doughnuts running club vibrant in our community. You are helping us to ensure next year's 5K Doughnut Run will go on, in-person, as we look toward the future.
You get cool stuff too!!! We will mail you a commemorative Boco Gear beanie designed by Josie Crampsey and a 5K Doughnut Run medal with the design chosen from our 2020 contest. There will be a couple other surprises in your virtual race kits too. You really don't want to miss this.
You will have from Friday, December 4th - Monday, December 7th to report your 5K results. If you're the competitive type, we are giving you the option of using one our our 3 USATF certified Doughnut Run Courses. the original 5K (after we upgraded from 4K) 2015, 2016-2019 (the one with your favorite hill to climb!) & our brand new 2020 course. You will post your results against others who run the same course. Or, you can make up your own route in your town.
