Event Description
We are cordially inviting you to join us in completing a virtual 5k or 1 mile walk/run to support Waves of Education. With your help we hope to raise at least $30,000 (but let’s be honest we want to raise much more) which will be put toward building a primary school in central Uganda.
What:
Virtual 5k or Virtual 1 mile walk/run.
Who:
People like YOU running (or walking) to help the children of Uganda have a better tomorrow.
Where:
Complete your 5k or 1 mile run/walk ANYWHERE. It can be on the treadmill, in the park, on the beach; wherever you prefer. Indoors or outdoors; it’s totally up to you!
When:
Both events will be held from Sunday, March 28th until Sunday, April 25th. You can record your results on any day or time within this period, but results must be submitted by April 25th at 11:59 pm EST.
We’re scheduled to kick off our scouting trip to Uganda on March 26th. If Covid doesn’t change our plans, we’ll attempt to run a 5k through our potential school locations. Follow our Instagram @thewavesofeducation as we document our journey. Let’s make this race global!
THE DETAILS:
Why the distances?
The average distance that a Ugandan child walks to school each day is about 5k, if he or she is lucky enough to go. Imagine being 8 years old and relying on your feet to get you everywhere. Join our event to gain a little bit of perspective of what this might feel like and put yourself in a young Ugandan’s shoes!
T- Shirts:
If you sign up on or before Sunday, March 14th you are guaranteed a T-shirt before the race begins on March 28th. If you sign up after March 14th you will still get a T-shirt, but you will not receive the T-shirt until after the race is completed on April 25th.
If you live in New Jersey or certain parts of New York there will be a designated pick up area where you will be able to pick up your T-shirt. If you live outside of New Jersey or the parts of New York where we will have pick up areas, then your T-shirt will shipped to you.
Teams:
Invite your friends to join you at the Waves of Education - Run Toward a Better Future. If you get 10 friends to sign up using your special referral link, you will receive a refund of up to $30.00 as our Thank You!
Timing:
This is a timed race. Once you start your walk/run keep the clock going and do the best you can to complete the entire 5k or 1 mile. Whether you walk it or run it or do a combination of both, be proud of yourself and know that we are cheering you on from the sidelines!
Awards:
Top 3 best individual times for the 5k event.
Top 3 best individual times for the 1 mile event.
Top individual fundraiser.
Photo Challenge:
Upload a picture or selfie with your time(s) to RunSignUp and a contest winner will be chosen for best photo. Meaning, get creative ladies and gentlemen! We like whacky, silly, and crazy. Is your pet participating in this event with you? Snap a photo! Matching outfits with the family? Great; we want to see it! Again, we want to celebrate YOU and want everyone to see the true faces of Waves of Education.
