Event Description

Join us at Lake Clare this summer for a two (2) part annual Huntington Mile Open Water Swim Series presented by Live4Love Aquatics (L4LA) and partner, Parkview Huntington Family YMCA. The first race of the Huntington Mile OWS series will take place during the Huntington Heritage Days with clinic(s), practice(s), and 4 timed races (including a youth/beginner division!). Huntington Mile Open Water Swim Series #1 will be on Saturday June 19th, 2021 at 8:00am on the waters of Lake Clare in Huntington, IN. Series #2 is Saturday, September 18th, 2021 at 8am! In addition to the race dates, the Live4Love Aquatics team will return for a 3rd year to offer  #SummerSundays2021 open water swim practices! About the Venue:

Lake Clare is a 65+ acre piece of land located on the Huntington Township west line that offers the county a natural resource for their members and neighbors to enjoy the outdoors. Recreational features such as hiking trails, pavilions, playground, fishing waters, picnic areas with grills, and kayak/SUP rentals (to name a few) attract area residents and visitors to Lake Clare year round. Heritage and legacy encompass the grounds of one of Huntington's most attractive natural resources. Lake Clare is the home training waters to past legendary coach, Glen Hummer; multiple Olympians (Rockefeller, Dilley, & Vogel); current master endurance swimmers; and USA pro triathletes.

*Bring a photo ID and your USMS License (if you have one) to packet pickup and registration.
*USMS waivers ; one day USMS one time event (OEVT) license; and USMS Covid-19 Attendee Screening Form will be taken care of here.
*Cash, check and credit card payments(3% fee) can be accepted for day before and race day registrations.

 

CLOTHING

*Males must wear speedo-cut bottoms, jammers, or shorts at minimum. 
*Shirtless torsos are allowed for men only.
*Females must wear swim suit bottoms and public swimming appropriate tops at minimum.

 

COURSES

The 1/2 Mile, 1 Mile and 2 Mile courses are configured in out-and-back triangular style loops, marked by large buoys on the corners and sighting buoys in between.   Sprint is 1 lap, Olympic is 2 laps, and Two Mile OWS is 4 laps (biggest loop). The beginner division will complete a 300 yard out and back around a mini triangle within the main course.  For all races: the start and the finish takes place on the beach. This is considered a running beach start/finish.

RULES

Current 2021 U.S. Masters Swimming Open Water and Long Distance rules will govern this event. Swimmers must wear the swim cap provided, have their race numbers on their arms, and follow all announced safety rules without exception.  Wetsuits/skin suits will be permitted.

ENTRIES

Online registration will remain open until Monday, June 15th at 12noon.  After that time the only way to register is in person on race morning beginning at 6am and prior to the start of your race (cash, check, credit card accepted).

ENTRY FEES

The below entry fees cover safety & rescue (water craft, lifeguards, dive team, EMT), course equipment, USMS sanctioning, officials/referees, event insurance, race shirts, swim caps, swag, awards, chip timing and post-race food & drink. There is $5 price increase reflecting RACE DAY registration.  Early Registration closes 4 days prior to the event. Feel free to submit any questions.

Two Mile Swim #1 (#2): $65 until 04/30 (07/31); $75 until 6/15 (until 09/14), $80 RACE DAY
Huntington Mile #1 (#2): $50 until 04/30 (07/31) / $60 until 6/15 (09/14), $65 RACE DAY
Huntington Sprint #1 (#2): $40 until 04/30 (07/31) / $50 until 6/15 (09/14), $55 RACE DAY
Lil' Hummer Splash #1 (#2): $25 until 04/30 (07/31) / $35 until 6/15 (09/14), $40 RACE DAY

CHIP TIMING

Our 2021 races will be chip timed by Ruble Timing.  Each swimmer will wear an ankle bracelet with a chip attached. Your individual chip time starts when you cross the mat to enter the water and stops when you cross the mat coming out of the water. Timing chips will be given out in race bags for pre-registered swimmers and day before registration. Race Day: give as you register

NUMBERING

All participants must be body marked race morning with a permanent marker by a volunteer, and will receive a wristband at packet pickup that is mandatory to wear during the race with their number on it.

SAFETY

Safety support will be coordinated with professional emergency services and volunteers. Swimmers will be briefed on all safety aspects before the start of the race. Race officials have the authority to postpone or cancel the event for safety reasons.  Officials, Lifeguards, Referees, and other safety personnel will line the courses. The personnel and volunteers will be on kayaks, paddle boards, and/or John Boat. All youth participants must have a spotter/monitor on a kayak or paddle board as well as parents permission. For safety reasons, those not able to complete the 2 Mile distance in 2 hours 30 minutes are advised not to enter this division; you will be listed in the results as DNF if you exceed this time. Our recommendation is to participate in a shorter distance division or come train with Live4Love during our Sunday open water swim practices this season!

REFUND POLICY

There are no refunds or deferrals for this event, no exceptions. In the case of inclement weather or other unexpected circumstances, the race director has the right to cancel the race or shorten the event. In this case there will be no refunds provided. In signing up for this event, the participants are agreeing to these terms.

CHECK IN & MANDATORY MEETING

All swimmers must check in at the starting location at least 45 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the race. All swimmers will be required to attend the final pre-race briefing 30 minutes before the start of the first race. Failure to arrive on time for the briefing could result in disqualification.

RESULTS

Post-race results will be posted on this website and will be put up on display at the race site as soon as available

RESTROOMS

There will be porta-johns on site and the park has a small restroom. 
 

T-SHIRTS, MEDALS, AWARDS

T-Shirts will be in the race packet. 
Swim Caps will be in the race packet
Awards for top 3 in each USMS age group for the Swimmers, plus top 3 in youth divisions.  There are no relays in this event.

 

FOOD AND WATER

Water will be available at the concession stand and first aid stations
LIMITED water will be available on the swim course by means of spotter/monitor, so please plan accordingly. 
Drinks, some snack food, and breakfast will be available pre and post-race at the finish line and concessions.
 

​CONTINGENCY PLANS

​COVID-19

In addition to USMS rules and regulations, The Huntington Mile Open Water Series is being presented and hosted in accordance with local, state, and federal health officials as it relates to COVID-19. All volunteers, staff, and participants are required to fill out the USMS COVID-19 Attendee Screening Form within 48 hours of the Event.  Due to the Event being outdoors spectators are not required to be screened but ALL attendees are required to follow remaining guidelines in place.

Season Practices: Summer Sundays

Perfect! We have you covered! The L4L Aquatics Team will set their 500 yard triangular course for you to practice! #SummerSundays2021 run from May 16th-September 26th. Open water swim practice begins at 1pm. Right now we are offering the early bird rate for everyone! Opening Day (May 16th) the season pass rate will increase. However, discounts will still be available to YMCA, USMS, and USA Swimming members. All experienced swimmers 14 years old and up are welcome!
