Event Description
The Boys & Girls Club of Newark (BGCN) is an after school program in the City of Newark. We are more than an after school program. We believe in supporting children from an wholistic approach. On site at the Boys & Girls Club of Newark we have a pediatric dental center that provides no cost to low cost dental services to children in the community, food distributions, vision care and social and emotional support to children who attend the program.
In honor of the Boys & Girls Club Day for Kids, our 5K to Wellness is scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 19th at Branch Brook Park in Newark, NJ.
Albeit a challenging 2020 due to the pandemic, we have been able to serve our members and the greater community, through food distributions, vision care and oral health. Despite the disruption in our usual service delivery, we have been able to safely support over 120 members during our summer enrichment program and the current 2020-2021 academic year through our full day program. Specifically, in 2020 our wellness department has been able to engage 449 members in groups focused on social and emotional development, 124 members participated in family engagement activities and 460 children participated in oral health education. Despite the reservations of our families to resume face to face health services, we were able to provide vision screenings and oral health services to children and lastly, we have been able to provide over 2 tons of food to our families and the community.
When you register for BGCN's 5K to Wellness, you are supporting our efforts to raise funds to support our Wellness department, in order to expand our capacity to serve more of Newark’s youth and their families. This will provide more youth and families access to services like dental and eye care, stress management activities such as meditation, as well as crisis support to address mental and behavioral health issues.
You will get cool stuff too! You will receive a t-shirt and a 5K run/walk finisher medal. The race will take place on a USATF certified course.
