Event Description

The KDP 5K Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, August 28th @ 8:00 am at Lowe Warner Park in Troy, NC. Rain or Shine.  It will be a timed race.  Awards will be given to the Top 10 Male and top 10 Female.

We are organizing this race for Kyle Packer on behalf of his family and friends.

All proceeds will go directly to Kyle & his wife Lori to help them with mounting medical expenses due to Kyle's ongoing battle with a very rare form of cancer.

Kyle's battle started in August 2019 with a "high grade adenocarcinoma" in the parotid. In September of 2019 Kyle had an 11 hour surgery. Then from Oct.-Dec. he underwent 33 radiation sessions to the face.

In April of 2020, Kyle had a follow up scan that revealed that the cancer had metastasized to his lungs. He then started chemo through August of 2020. After a brief resting period, he had follow up scans in December. Unfortunately, on December 7th, Kyle was told that the cancer went from 4 lesions to over 10 and had also metastasized to the base of his skull. From December to January 22nd, 2021 the one on his skull went from 2mm to 2cm, and then on March 15, it had grown to 3cm. He was fitted for another radiation mask for upcoming treatments on his skull. This mask does not have openings for the eyes or mouth and it also wraps completely around your head not just over the top). They are also starting a very high dose of chemotherapy as the next trial would not help him as much as they hoped (it is an immunotherapy trial and his cancer needs a ATR type inhibitor as he has an ATR Mutation}. Treatments started in April. The left side of Kyle's lungs already have airway blockage. He was on a trial, but the trial did not work as the cancer had shown a 30% growth.

Only 250 cases of "high grade adenocarcinoma" have been reported in the US, and Chapel Hill sees 15 of those patients per year. However, Kyle's particular condition accounts for 1%. Therefore, it is extremely rare due to the genetic mutation, there are no genetic markers that make it able to be targeted and attacked by his immune system or by any type of chemotherapy. Everything they are trying is literally a shot in the dark.

Kyle and Lori have always served others and helped anyone they could. This race is a way to give back and to help offset their mounting medical expenses. It is also the hope to bring them some financial peace as Kyle so courageously fights this battle! Kyle has worked at this job this entire time, but will have to stop for now since his next regimen will be extremely difficult and taxing on his body.
