Please join us on the 11th of September 2021 and participate in the 1st annual 5K Scrub Run – Run for Rachel. This annual race will raise funds to support a scholarship for future nursing and health care students. This event has been established in memory of Rachel Petersen, the 25-year-old daughter of DeKalb, Illinois residents, Bill and Karyn Petersen. Rachel, a graduate of DeKalb High School and a nursing graduate of Valparaiso University, passed away 9 days after being diagnosed with a deadly brain tumor. Rachel was a compassionate nurse, doing what she loved, when she fell ill. Rachel was also an avid participant in fun runs - with an emphasis on FUN!.
The annual race event will take place at Hopkins Park in DeKalb, pending any public health limitations. There is also a Virtual Option for you to participate wherever you are! All monies raised will contribute to the Rachel E Petersen Memorials Scholarship fund, an educational scholarship fund for a nursing student. The annual scholarship has an expected 10-year goal of a semester worth of tuition being awarded. This is a non-refundable event. If public health issues prohibit an in-person event, it will still be held virtually.
T-shirts are being designed with the official logo of the fun run. Participants who register by August 22 will receive a t-shirt. After that date, t-shirts are not guaranteed. Participants in DeKalb will receive their t-shirt on-site on race day. There will also be t-shirt pick up locations in Austin Texas and on campus at Valparaiso University. Exact locations and time for the pick up will be shared directly via email closer to the event date with participants who select either of these options. Participants selecting the Virtual Option, can add to have their swag mailed directly - an additional fee applies for postage and handling. For alternate T-shirt pick up locations or mailing, select the Virtual option and choose the t-shirt size and delivery option from the menu.
