Historic Walk to Explore the Stories of Midway and Preserve a Rural Future
The Midway Volksmarch fundraising event is a perfect kick-off to the beautiful fall season. Join us for the 3rd Annual Midway Volksmarch and earn a new collector’s stocknagel (pronounced shtewknaygl, also known as a walking stick medallion)!
Proceeds from the Volksmarch will help us to preserve Midway's priceless rural spaces that are worth saving. Our current projects include Mountain Spaa and the Kohler Dairy as well as many in progress. Our route map will highlight the progress we are making, but preservation can only be done with your support – so THANK YOU for putting your money where your heart is and helping to preserve the Midway we all love!
Volksmarching is a European tradition that involves people of all ages in a fun, non-competitive 5k or 10k walk to bring people together and highlight what makes their town unique. We are continuing this tradition in our Midway Swiss Mountain Village. Midway's Volksmarch will take walkers past historic homes, barns, unique geologic features as well as our quaint businesses on Main Street, to the top of our iconic Memorial Hill and back to Midway Town Square for a festive fall party with live music, European food, booths, activities, games and more.
This year the event will honor local photographer, Quinn Calder, whose photographs depict rural Midway. Local artist, Robert Duncan, will also be honored. Both have contributed prints to sell which have captured the essence of rural Midway, which we are striving to preserve for future generations.
There will be cow bells, walking sticks, Calder’s print, Duncan's posters and more for sale at the event. You won’t want to miss out on the incredible prizes at the opportunity drawing!
You’ll receive a wristband at check-in which will give participants special discounts on meals and retail items that local businesses plan to offer. So be sure to make this a weekend event and explore the many great things Midway has to offer. Consider any of our amazing places to stay including the Zermatt, Blue Boar Inn or the historic Homestead Resort (currently being updated and preserved).
**There is also a historical mile walk for those who may need a shorter route on paved roads.
**Your registration includes a stocknagel (walking stick medallion) and the opportunity to help preserve Midway's rural spaces.
CHECK-IN: Begins at 9:30 am at Town Square and goes until 11:00 am. Please check in at least 15 min. prior to your walk time. Pre-registration is encouraged but we will also take walk-up registrations the morning of the event. (Prices will increase from $15 to $20 and $35 to $45) Morning drinks and snacks will be available for purchase at the event.
START TIME: Please register for a time frame to begin your walk. This will help to keep the roads safe and manage traffic as well as help with distancing for COVID regulations. However, if you miss your time, you will still be allowed to walk when you arrive.
COURSE: The paths will be on a combination of asphalt and hard-packed road base. Pick your “Pathway to Preservation” from 3 available routes. The routes meander through Midway along neighborhood streets and roadways where, at times, you will be walking on the shoulder. Please be sure to obey all pedestrian rules of the road. Strollers and wheelchairs are fine, but may be difficult if you choose to go up Memorial Hill.
Bring your walking stick or purchase one at the event. We will have a station to attach your new stocknagel! There will be a water station en route but please bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and any other items you will need. Lederhosen is welcome and encouraged!
Route 1: 5k: The 5k winds around Midway and includes a summit of the iconic Memorial Hill where you get a view of the entire valley. Strollers and wheelchairs might be difficult up the dirt road. This route takes 1-2 hours to complete.
Route 2: Historic Mile: This loop can be completed in about 30 minutes, but if you take time to read the historic stories and breaks to eat and shop at our quaint shops and eateries, you could spend all day.
Route 3: 10k: For the more adventerous walkers, this route will extend from Main Street up to 600 North and Mountain Spa, where you can not only learn the stories of Midway, but also about the unique geologic features and rural elements of Midway. Anticipate 2-3 hours to walk this route and choose an early start time.
PARKING: Parking will be available at the LDS church on 165 N Center St, Midway. You will receive an email as the event approaches with parking details.
**PLEASE walk, bike, or carpool to Town Square to keep traffic minimal on the walking routes.
FESTIVITIES: Join us for a festive celebration upon completion of your route. Live music, Food, Opportunity Drawing (Raffle), Fun! Booths and festivities will go until 2:00pm. Feel free to join in even if you weren't able to complete the walk. There will be something for everyone!
