Event Description

Brave the waters just off of Margaret Pace Park and head inland from the infamous Escape Island. The bike course provides an interesting and scenic view of Miami that continues until you run across the finish line. Many have tried, but the question is — WILL YOU ESCAPE?

INTERNATIONAL DISTANCE
Swim Course (1.5 KM/0.9 Miles)
Starts on Escape Island (where the ferry drops you off) and heads back to Miami in the open waters of Biscayne Bay north of the Venetian and MacArthur Causeways. Land ashore at Margaret Pace Park and head to the transition as hundreds of fans cheer you on.

Bike Course (40 KM/24.8 Miles)
The bike course takes you over the bay on a straightaway into Miami Beach using the Julia Tuttle Causeway. The two-lap course provides you with a challenge as you climb the causeway while remaining within view of Escape Island. This portion of the course requires participants to climb the causeway’s bridges eight times and will favor those riders who’ve integrated multiple short climbs into their cycling workouts, so train accordingly! The course also passes through Miami’s revamped Wynwood Design District and past some of Miami Beach’s well-known mansions along Alton Road.

Run Course (10 KM/6.2 Miles)
The course takes you past the The Adrienne Arsht Center and Miami Herald buildings, two of Miami’s signature architectural landmarks. You then begin the climb over the MacArthur Causeway, running along cruise ship row and Hibiscus & Palm Islands. You’ll make your turn around at Star Island, home of Miami’s rich and famous. As you complete your run back over over the bridge, you will have one last glimpse off to your right of where it all started — Escape Island.

SPRINT DISTANCE (PRESENTED BY MACK CYCLE)
Swim Course (0.4 KM/0.25 Miles)
The Sprint swim is straight out from the shoreline for a left turn that then stays parallel with the shoreline. Another left turn takes you toward the swim finish. where fans will cheer you on as your grab your bike and get peddling.

Bike Course (21 KM/13 Miles)
The one-loop sprint distance bike course utilizes the same route as the International distance race taking you over the ocean on a straightaway into Miami Beach using the Julia Tuttle Causeway. The single-lap course provides you with a challenge as you climb the causeway while taking in the beautiful scenery and amazing view of Escape Island. The course also passes through Miami’s revamped Wynwood Design District and past some of Miami Beach’s well-known mansions along Alton Road.

Run Course (5 KM/3.1 Miles)
The final leg of the triathlon is where you show everyone what Sprint really means. Run along the same route as the International distance, but turn around at Jungle Island and then continue along the International distance course.

COURSE MARKERS, SIGNAGE AND SAFETY
The swim, bike and run courses will be marked with different types of signage/markers/cones to identify turns, hazards, aid stations and other items.

ISLAND/SWIM COURSE
Start locations: All International distance athletes will be loaded onto the ferries at Sea Isle Marina located just south of Margaret Pace Park. Loading time begins at 4:45 a.m. All Sprint distance athletes will start on the shore line on Margaret Pace Park just north of the tennis courts.
Waves: Waves are based on age and gender. The International distance with have three mass wave starts and the Sprint distance will have six.
Buoys: Keep buoys on your left shoulder; observe current to make sure you stay on course.
Lifeguards and support: Lifeguards and support vessels will be lined up throughout the course. If assistance is needed please visibly raise your hand and a staff member will assist you.
Swim IN Water Station: There will be a water station located inside transition upon completion of the swim course.
Environmental sustainability: At “Escape Island,” also known as “Picnic Pace Park,” in an effort to preserve our marine environment, our staff will not allow participants to enter the water in areas with submerged vegetation. There will also be trashcans provided for any last minute items that need to be discarded and removed from the island.

TRANSITION AREA CONDUCT
For safety reasons, you will not be permitted to ride your bike in or out of the transition area. You must walk or run exiting transition until you reach the “mount line” on the road. When returning into transition, you must get off your bicycle when you reach the “dismount line” on the road and walk or run. Please watch out for the other athletes as you move through transition, and follow the instructions of race officials and volunteers.

BIKE COURSE
All bikers will have use of one lane and the shoulder along the Julia Tuttle Causeway. All Sprint distance athletes will ride the bike course ONCE only. All International distance athletes will ride the bike course TWICE.
Orange road markings (sprayed on ground): Denote hazards such as potholes, cracks and areas of concern.
Course turn barricades: Barricades with a directional arrow will be at each turn on the bike course.
Yellow course signage: Denotes “SLOW DOWN TURN AROUND AHEAD” or “SHARP TURN AHEAD.. There will be two sharp U-turns on course; the first at Alton Rd. & Michigan Ave. in Miami Beach and the second on N Federal Hwy & NE 47th Street.
Support: The SAG vehicle will be available upon request to pick up athletes and their bikes that may not be able to continue throughout the race or who have not met the specified course cut off time. Should you encounter a flat tire or mechanical issue on course, please report to the nearest staff member or police officer to dispatch a bike course mechanic for assistance. Please be aware there are only so many bike mechanics on course and your anticipated patience is greatly appreciated.
Course note: The turn around for the International distance bike course will be at NE 2nd Ave. & NE 19th Street. There will be course signage alerting all bikers of “Sprint/International Split Ahead” and “International Lap 2 100 ft”. When entering this split zone all International distance bikes need to stay LEFT and all Sprint distance bikes will need to stay RIGHT.
Water bottle exchange zone – International Distance ONLY: Will be located at NE 2nd Ave. & NE 36th Street. International bikers will have the option to discard their water bottles and swap for a fresh one at the beginning of lap two just before entering the Julia Tuttle Causeway. Old water bottles will NOT be returned if dropped at the water bottle exchange zone.
Mount and dismount zone: Upon exiting transition, you must run with your bike until you have reached the mounting zone managed by a staff member. Following the completion of the bike course please dismount your bike in the designated area and proceed on foot back into transition. Failure to comply may result in a penalty.

RUN COURSE

Sprint/International Split: The Sprint/International Split is located on the MacArthur Causeway at the Jungle Island exit ramp. There will be signage and volunteers there to direction Sprint distance athletes to turn left and International distance athletes to continue straight to the Star Island turn around.
Water stations: Water stations will be located at just as you exit transition, on N Bayshore Drive behind the Arsht Center, Jungle Island and the turn around at the intersection of Star Island. The water stations at N Bayshore Drive and Jungle Island are available on the return as well.
Cool down stations: The safety and health of our participants always remains a top priority to our staff. In the likely event of a hot Miami day, you can expect to find two different spray stations on the run course as well as ice towels when you cross the finish line!

UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT
Unsportsmanlike conduct or the verbal abuse of any race official or volunteer during the race or at any time during the event weekend will result in your immediate disqualification.

Restrooms
Restrooms will be available at the start line, finish line, all aid stations and other locations along the course.

SAG wagon and back of the pack crew
The SAG wagon and back of the pack crew will signify the end of the field and the maximum 18-minute-per-mile pace. They will not start timing until the last person crosses the start line and will be with you throughout the race. If you cannot maintain an 18-minute mile pace, you will be required to board the support buses.

Please note: Due to safety restrictions on the course wheelchair participation is not permitted.

ALERT SYSTEM
This race will utilize the EAS system, encompassing a color-coded system to reveal current event conditions. Participants will notice flags posted throughout the race venue, at the finish line and at each aid station on race day. EAS updates will be communicated through PA announcements, social media, web posts and/or dedicated emails.
