Event Description

Grab your friends and family and join us for an awareness fundraising 5k in October for Granulomatous Mastitis! Set to start during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the day after National Mammogram day, we hope to raise funds to help research this rare breast disease. This is a virtual race, so you complete it any time, any where! Be sure to upload. your selfies using the hashtag #GMAwareness5k on race weekend.

New this year the first 20 people who sign up at $40  will receive a commemorative plaque hand made by our very own Barbie Brooks, founder of the Granulomatous Mastitis Support group on Facebook. After those 20 spots are taken, registration will drop back down to our regular $20 with all proceeds (minus processing fees) will go towards research.

Granulomatous Mastitis is a rare inflammatory breast disease. It's so rare that it was, and still is, commonly misdiagnosed as breast cancer. Since so little research has been done on this disease, there is no cure and treatments vary widely. All proceeds from this race will be donated directly to the American Society of Breast Surgeons . Last year we raised over $1,200 for this foundation. As a result of our efforts they created a new grant specifically for doctors and researchers focusing on Granulomatous Mastitis. Every dollar raised goes to this grant fund- we ARE making a difference!

For more info on the American Society of Breast surgeons go to their website at https://breast360.org/

The American Society of Breast Surgeons scored 91/100 on https://www.charitynavigator.org/ein/202286355  showing that a majority of funds raised goes directly to research and support programs instead of administrative salaries or marketing efforts.

As this fundraising race grows, we are hoping to add other "prize" offerings. Ultimately though, it is our mission to keep costs low on this virtual race so more funds can be used for research.

If you plan on running the race in person or with a group, please let us know! We will add group runs to the updates on this race for those who would like to meet other GM patients, families, and friends.
