Father, husband and teacher, John loved his children, grandchildren, coaching, hunting, fishing, and riding his Harley motorcycle. John was committed to encouraging the development of healthy lifestyles through clean living, good sportsmanship and physical fitness.

Known as "Mr. Hay" to thousands of young students and athletes throughout Chester County, John's greatest love was working with children, and he will be remembered for his strong and caring guidance and his unrelenting efforts to assist each of his students to reach his or her full potential.

John has had a profound and positive influence on the youth of Chester County, whether in the classroom, on the track or in the swimming pool. Over his coaching career, John was honored by the Daily Local News as Outstanding Coach of the Year as a coach of Henderson High School's track, cross county and swimming teams.

He also received the YMCA Service to Youth Award, the Eddie Prye Award for youth development, the Cecil E. Tate Sportsmanship Award, and was inducted into the Chester County Sports Hall of Fame.
