Event Description

The most common type of substance exposure reported to poison control centers in recent years is illegal or misused prescription opioids, with nearly 284,000 cases of exposure including 5,300 exposures to heroin and fentanyl to children under the age of 5 years old. Over a 12-month period, 9.49 million Americans ages 12 and older admitted to misusing opioids at least once. Over 2.7 million of those people qualified as having an opioid disorder. Misuse of prescription opioids is just one of the major factors that can lead to childhood depression.

An estimated 3.2 million children between the ages of 12 and 17 in the United States have had at least one major depressive episode in a 12-month period. Once a child has had an episode, they are at risk for ensuing more episodes in the future without proper therapy and actions taken to prevent them. Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders in children and is a risk factor for developing a number of other mental health symptoms and disorders. This is where Kids R' Giants and our community step in to make a difference!

Kids R’ Giants (KRG) is a therapeutic behavior support program in Corona, California. We utilize evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral model therapeutic programs to help troubled children and their caregivers learn how to effectively manage their emotions and overcome their traumas. Experienced and highly trained staff work with each child and their family to assess challenges and problems and develop an action plan. Children and families may participate in KRG programs to prevent future antisocial behavior and reduce the chances of conflict with family, peers, and authority figures. As social and behavioral experts, our mission is to teach children and parents how to manage certain behaviors in a way that allows children to grow into successful, emotionally intelligent, and independent adults.

Our inaugural 5K run is a hybrid event, taking place in person (in Corona, CA on Saturday, November 19th) and virtually around the country. Participants will come together to raise awareness of mental health issues in children and help support the mission of Kids R’ Giants. In person attendees will also have the opportunity to look around our Community Health Village to learn from sponsors about mental health and wellness for children, have their blood pressure checked and get a COVID-19 vaccination.
