Run with the Independence big dogs! Come out this Independence Day weekend and run, walk, or race – bring your lovely pet or push a stroller – and earn that medal!
Built with the best routes, routes that are built for speed and all the beauty Fort Steilacoom has to offer. This run is pet and stroller friendly. Just add motivation and if you have what it takes – which you do- you will earn the rewards!
The location is the gorgeous Fort Steilacoom Park on the paved Waughop Lake loop and the multi-use trails – suitable for Pets and Strollers. Please ensure that you know the route, understand the multi-use trail system. While Pets and Strollers are welcome, each participant must ensure the course is not too rugged or challenging for you particular situation. There will be water stops along the well-marked route and refreshments at the start and finish. Athletes will finish through the big Just TRI Finish arch and receive Just TRI Finisher Medals, T-Shirt (5K and 10K). The Kids race participants - Receive a medal, race Shirts will be available for purchase.

Wait, what? YES! Cash prizes…the Just TRI Staff has hidden 3 idols, each with $10-$25.00 along the course. Why? Because we want you to win and by finding the hidden idols, you win! There will be 3 hidden idols, one for each course – The 5K, 10K, and the Kids 1 Mile run – Turn the idol in at the finish to the Race Director and receive Cash. Cold Hard, Cash! Look for clues on Just TRI’s Facebook page for details and clues.
10K & 5K Fun Run / Walk – Pets and Strollers
Look for the release of the official course map - coming soon. Fort Steilacoom Park has many on-going trail improvements, so we don’t want to get the stroller too far in front of the athlete! We do know that at least one loop around Waughop Lake will be used for the 5K and likely two loops for the 10K. But stay tuned for the exact routes.
We are allowing Stroller and Pets on the course. This is BIG! Right…we want you involved with your entire family so bring pets, bring your littles ones, and bring a friend. But ensure you’re comfortable with running with your leashed pet or pushing a stroller. Make you are comfortable with the routes and condition of the running surface. While we know pets and parents with strollers have navigated these routes, you must study the course and feel comfortable that they meet your expectations. ALL Pets must be leashed during the race – as well in the park – we strong encourage the adherence to all park rules.
The 5K is completely inside Fort Steilacoom Park and likely the 10K as well. Both the 10K and 5K will be pretty much be flat and fast courses. Participants can take their time, run or walk – fast or slow – be safe and have fun. The races take the best parts of the course - along the beautiful shores of Waughop Lake and the best use of paved surfaces. There will likely be some hill elements, but nothing crazy! Components of the run will use the multi-use trail system. The multi-use trails in the park are very manageable. Stay tuned for the final course design.
1 Mile Kids Fun Run or Walk
We always like to do this for the kids! All participants - 10 and under – can participate. They will receive a great looking Medal. The run or walk is just for fun and involve children to let them feel the fun of exercise. There are no placing medals, but they will be inspired. Parents with strollers, pets, and all are welcome and encouraged to complete this fun race. It’s nearly free! It’s Fun! It’s for the whole family!
During the race:
- Please be sure to review the course! The Staff will know the course, but it is up to the athlete to know all the course details!
- All Park rules must be strickly adhered to. Including PET Leash rules. Pets absolutely must be leashed during all events.
- Athlete – Day of Race - Check in will start at 6AM at Shelter 1, at FORT STEILACOOM PARK!
- Day of the race check in gets crazy! We try to streamline this process as much as possible. Bib numbers for people wanting to register on the day of the race will be preassigned in our system. No additional swag will be handed out at this time – just the shirt and number. Come get Additional SWAG at Packet Pick up – stay tuned for Packet Pick up details.
- Course maps will be posted at packet pick up and at Day of Reg.
- The Kids 1 mile will start at 8:45. This way the 5K participants will finish their race and will be able to watch the kids run. The kids run will be really simple and is just for their fun. Kids get a bid number, and all finishers get a medal. Kids won’t be timed and do not get a shirt - Shirts are available for purchase.
- The use of personal music devices is strongly discouraged at this race. To enjoy all that our race has to offer and for the safety of all participants, JUST TRI encourages a headphone-free environment during the running of the event.
- Just TRI events are for the most part cupless, in general, but additionally due to COVID as well as we TRI to be Earth friendly. We will have some cups for those who do not have refillable bottles. Please bring your own container that can be refilled at our aid stations.

By joining our race you acknowledge and agree to adhere to generally accepted COVID safety protocols at the time of the race. These protocols are aligned with Washington State COVID-19 Safety standards that will or will likely be in placed at the time of the race. Currently face covering is optional – please be aware of updates in the days and weeks before race.
Awards
Awards will be presented to individual 10K and 5K – three deep. Award ribbons will be presented to age group winners, also three deep.
Age Groups: Under 20, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 & 60+.

Volunteers
We need your support! It’s easy money! Bring 10 volunteers out and Just TRI will make a $100.00 donation to your non-profit organization. There is no easier way to earn money for you group!!
