Many of you know and love our sweet Sarita, Sara Zuleta, of Ann Arbor, Michigan.  In the fall of 2019 Sara was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC).  With zero family history or genetic mutations (BRCA genes) that could explain where it came from, Sara’s been forced to navigate countless treatments, surgeries, and clinical trials in an effort to beat it.  After a year of having no evidence of disease, also known as 'NED,' Sara received the devastating news this past November that her cancer had returned in her lung. This finding defined her cancer as Stage 4.

As a result Sara and her partner Bryan have recently moved back to Ann Arbor to be closer to family and friends as they navigate this part of Sara's journey, and we want to do something special to welcome them both back home!

Please join us on Sunday June 11 to go on a Stroll for Sara, a stroll that will raise money to be donated in Sara's name to the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation. This foundation's mission is to be a credible source for Triple Negative Breast Cancer information, a catalyst for science and patient advocacy and a caring community with meaningful services for patients and their families.

What is TNBC?  TNBC stands for Triple Negative Breast Cancer.  Breast cancer is diagnosed based on the presence or absence of three receptors, which are the drivers for the development and growth of breast cancer.  These include estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and HER2-neu.  Triple negative breast cancer is diagnosed when a woman’s pathology report indicates a negative result for all three.  This makes it harder to treat, as common hormones and targeted therapies don't work.  While TNBC accounts for about 10-20% of all breast cancer cases, it is a particularly aggressive form of breast cancer with a poorer prognosis compared to other subtypes.

Why is it important to raise awareness of TNBC?  Raising awareness about triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is vital, as it accounts for 10-20% of all breast cancer cases and disproportionately affects younger women and certain ethnic groups. TNBC is a more aggressive form of breast cancer with limited targeted therapies, making early detection crucial for improving the 5-year survival rate, which is lower than other breast cancer subtypes. By increasing public understanding of TNBC, we can encourage earlier screening, foster support for the 1 in 8 women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and drive research efforts towards innovative treatments.

The Walk:  Sara was only 27 years old when she was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer in 2019. On June 11, we will walk 2.7 miles for Sara. The walk will start at Hunt Park in the Waterhill neighborhood in Ann Arbor. We will walk from Hunt Park (1035 Daniel St, Ann Arbor, MI 48103) to YORK (1928 Packard St, Ann Arbor, MI 48104) where we will have multiple live DJs hosting a online stream of the event ( a link will go out for viewing, if you are not local or cannot attend the event!), as well as snacks, refreshments and additional information available on how you can donate and support TNBC and other cancer treatment resources. There is ample street parking in the neighborhoods surrounding Hunt Park and YORK. Make sure to arrange your transportation to get back to Hunt Park on your own as the event will end at YORK.

If you are attending the walk, we encourage you to wear a pink and or purple outfit to highlight the colors the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation uses in their branding to attract awareness - a pink or purple t-shirt WILL be included with your registration fee! 90% of the event fees collected will be donated to the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation. The additional 10% will support us in organizing this fundraiser.

We will also have a Smiles for Sara collection box where you are welcome to bring the following to go directly to Sara: comfy clothes, giftcards, old photos from fun times with Sara, or anything you think would bring a smile to Sara's face!
