About Martinus Evans and Slow AF Run Club: The Ultimate Guide for Anyone Who Wants to Run

In 2012, Martinus Evans,  was a 360-pound former football player with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science working at Men’s Wearhouse. During the evaluation for his persistent hip pain, his doctor dropped a bomb: “Mr. Evans, you’re fat. You can either lose weight or die.” But Martinus defiantly created a third option – taking his life into his own hands and proving his doctor, and everyone who ever doubted him, wrong by running a marathon.

Since then, Martinus has completed 8 marathons, including Boston, New York, and Berlin, and more than one hundred other long-distance races. He was the first plus-sized ambassador for Adidas and has been on the cover of Runner’s World. Using his experience, Martinus challenges the conventional narrative of
what a runner looks like in his new book, Slow AF Run Club: The Ultimate Guide for Anyone Who Wants to Run.

Using his experience, Martinus challenges the conventional narrative of what a runner looks like in his new book, Slow AF Run Club: The Ultimate Guide for Anyone Who Wants to Run.

Martinus makes the case that everyone is a runner. As long as your legs are moving faster than when you’re walking, you are running.

A body-liberation manifesto and guide to running all in one, Slow AF Run Club works to help empower people to embrace the body they have right now, lace up their shoes, and MOVE. Martinus is the example and role model, doing everything he tells us about in the book.

Praise for SLOW AF RUN CLUB:

“A rallying cry for runners who've been made to feel for any reason that there's no place for them in the sport, and a wake-up call for those of us in the running community who wish to help these runners feel welcome."
-Matt Fitzgerald, author of 80/20 Running

“Faced with the grim prognosis, ‘lose weight or die’ Martinus Evans embarked on an impassioned crusade to do something no one thought his 300 pound body was capable of doing, run a marathon. With a gritty determination and will of steel, he didn’t just finish one marathon but eight! As the founder of The Slow AF Running Club, running has changed Martinus’ life. And reading his story will change yours.”
- Dean Karnazes, New York Times Times bestselling author of Ultramarathon Man

“FINALLY! A book that centers the nontraditional athlete. Through powerful and humorous storytelling and thoughtful exercises, Martinus empowers would-be-runners to step outside and become runners. If you've ever doubted whether running was for you, welcome home. Martinus has created space for you!”
-Alison Mariella Désir, author of Running While Black

“I wish this book had existed when I was a young fat swimmer. Martinus has compiled a guide that’s thoughtful, practical, and deeply compassionate. Plus size athletes and aspiring athletes: this is the book you’ve been looking for.”
-Aubrey Gordon, New York Times bestselling author of “You Just Need to Lose Weight”: And 19 Other Myths About Fat People and co-host of the Maintenance Phase podcast.
