Event Description

The History

Lauren (Smith) Beam was a graduate of West Albany High School who went on to earn two degrees, swim for, and later coach at New York University in New York City.  At the age of 34, she passed away from colon cancer.  Her illness was a shock to everyone who knew her.  Lauren battled her cancer with fire and grace, inspiring everyone around her to be better people.  After Lauren passed away in September 2011, Lauren’s fan club of supporters (Team Beam), spontaneously organized an informal run in Central Park as a way to keep her remarkable spirit and determination alive.  This run was born from that day.  It represents something Lauren loved to do – run – as well as something that helps elevate the human spirit and celebrates life.

The 2016 Lauren Beam Foundation Oregon River Run is our third race held in Oregon.   We are excited to build this tradition of celebrating Lauren's life and raising money for young men and women battling cancer.  Our Foundation has helped several Oregonians by easing the financial burden caused by their disease.  Please join us for a morning of good health, fun, and philanthropy.

The course will be along the river and will be an out-and-back run (0.5 miles out to a clear turn-around and then back 0.5 miles to the starting point.) The Fun Run for Kids will be $5 with day-of-race sign up, and waivers will be available on site.

SPECTATORS:  Spectators can watch the race and cheer on runners from anywhere along the race route.  Some may find it enjoyable to stay close to the start and finish lines, which are located in Monteith Riverpark in downtown Albany at the intersection of NW Water Ave and SW Washington St.  Spectators can also stand on the sidewalks and watch the road race portion that proceeds through downtown Albany, or take a stroll down the Dave Clark Trail and find a sunny spot along the river.

RULES AND REGULATIONS: To satisfy insurance requirements, no head phones, skates, strollers (including running strollers), or animals are permitted in the run. Please stay within running course boundaries at all times. Failure to do so may result in disqualification. Race bibs must be fully visible at all times, and we recommend you attach it to your torso. The Lauren Beam Foundation reserves the right to refuse entry and/or to disqualify any individual from our run. This disqualification may be based on, but is not limited to: violation of the aforementioned rules; unsportsmanlike conduct; running with an unofficial number/race entry; crossing the finish line without having completed the entire course; and providing false information on the race entry form.  The Lauren Beam Foundation reserves the right to change the details of the race.
