Event Description

5K walk/run and 10K run hosted by a group of volunteers and the Lava Beds National Monument to raise money for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation in memory of wildland firefighters who have lost their lives or who have been seriously injured in the line of duty. The walk/run is also followed by a hosted BBQ lunch and raffle. All proceeds go directly to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation to support their mission.

The Wildland Firefighter Foundation's main focus is to help families of firefighters killed in the line of duty and to assist injured firefighters and their families. They honor and acknowledge past, present, and future members of the wildland firefighting community, and partner with private and interagency organizations to bring recognition to wildland firefighters.

This event was created after the untimely passing of Lava Beds National Monument Engine Captain, Shawn Price. Shawn was an integral part of the fire management program at the Lava Beds, and was known for his fun-loving nature, and goofy sense of humor. Just a year prior to Shawn's passing, Thomas Marovich Jr, a US Forest Service Wildland Firefigher Apprentice who worked on the Big Valley Ranger District in Adin, California, also tragically passed during a rappel accident on the Backbone Fire. These series of events prompted friends and co-workers of the two men to create the Shawn & Tom Firefighter Memorial Run to honor their friends.

After a few successful years, and the loss or more loved ones, the event organizers changed the fundraiser's name to the Wildland Firefighter Remembrance Run. Particpants of the event are encouraged to walk or run in memory of a loved one, and are provided a memorial board at registration to display their loved one's name.
