Event Description

The sun is rising on Sunday morning, January 1st, the first day of 2017. Where should you be? Pounding the trails of Lake Chabot, of course!

Join us at Lake Chabot in Castro Valley for the scenic and invigorating 5K, 10K or half marathon.

Better yet, make sure you run at the Brazen New Year's Eve race and then you can start 2017 with the highly coveted New Year Mega Medal! Learn about the New Year's Eve race here

Take it even one step higher by running both half marathons (one on 12/31 and one on 1/1) and then brag to your friends: "It took me two years to finish that marathon"!

All courses include rolling, but mostly very runnable hills. Because there is always a chance of rain before and (hopefully not) during the race, the courses chosen are generally "wet weather" friendly. This means the 5K will be entirely on paved trails around the lake. The 10K course is roughly 50% on paved trails and 50% on dirt trails. The half marathon is approximately 30% on paved trails 70% on dirt trails.

So whether you are an experienced trail runner or a first-timer ready to get your feet dirty, you should thoroughly enjoy these races. Hikers/walkers are always welcome!

All runners will receive custom finisher medals and custom shirts (cotton and tech shirts available). More info on shirts/awards page.

Age group awards will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in 5 year categories (less for the younger ages).

Start times will be: 8:30 am for the half marathon, 8:55 am for the 10K and 9:10 am for the 5K.

For half marathon participants who wish to hike the course and take more than 4.5 hours, we will offer a "Hiker Start" at 7:30 am. Those starting early should carry water as the first and second aid stations might not be 100% up and running, depending on the hikers speed. Hiker starts will not be eligible to win the race or for age group awards, but will be listed as official finishers in the Hikers Division and will still receive finisher medals.

All races will be professionally timed.

Note: We will have many extra shirts at the race, but because we have to print our shirts well ahead of race day, we can only 100% positively guarantee requested shirt sizes to those who sign up by 12/10/16.
