Event Description

Radford University Athletics and the Radford University Athletic Foundation will be hosting the Fourth Annual Highlander Half Marathon and 5K presented by Carilion Clinic on Saturday, April 25, 2020.  All race proceeds will go towards the Student-Athlete Scholarship Fund which provides scholarship aid to our 16 athletic programs. The Half Marathon will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Dedmon Center on Radford University's campus. The race course will take runners on a tour of Radford that includes Main Street, our beautiful campus, and the surrounding neighborhoods.  As runners head back to town, they will continue on their tour through Wildwood Park and end at Bisset Park. The 5K will begin at the Dedmon Center at 9:30 a.m. Runners will tour the Radford Athletic Complex and jump on the Bisset Park trail right by the dog park and follow it the whole way down the river. This race provides a scenic and family friendly race for everyone to enjoy.  All runners will cross the finish line and go straight into the Rolling on the River Food Truck Rodeo in Bisset Park. Come join us for a day of fun! Wear your Radford gear and show your support for our Highlanders.

The Highlander Half & 5K presented by Carilion Clinic is a part of Highlander Pride Weekend, a fundraiser from Radford Athletics and E.C. Pace Company to raise funds for the Student-Athlete Scholarship Fund. The 2020 weekend includes the Highlander Open Golf Tournament presented by Atlantic Bay Mortgage, and the Highlander Half & 5K presented by Carilion Clinic. The Highlander Half Marathon & 5K are point-to-point races, meaning that they start and end at separate locations. Both races will start at the Dedmon Center (101 University Drive) and end at Bisset Park at the Rollin' on the River Festival. Main athlete/spectator parking will be in Lot Z next to the Dedmon Center. Limited parking will also be available at Bisset Park. Beginning at 7:00 a.m. on race day, buses will shuttle athletes and spectators between the Bisset Park finish line and Lot Z.

RUNNER DROP-OFF
If you are dropping off a runner, you can drop them off at Lot Z. It is directly across from the start line. Please follow all directional signs when dropping off. Lot Z is also the location buses will be dropping off and picking up athletes and spectators for Bisset Park.

ROLLIN' ON THE RIVER FESTIVAL
The Highlander Half & 5K races both finish in Bisset Park at the Rollin' on the River Festival. The festival will include food trucks, live entertainment, and family activities. Each runner will receive one (1) complimentary beer ticket for the beer truck at the Rollin' on the River Festival. If you are 21 and plan on using the beer ticket, please make sure to bring your ID with you or have a family member/friend carry it for you during the race so that you can enjoy the cold beverages post-race.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
Come race day, a little rain in the forecast won’t stop us - BUT sometimes, there are weather events beyond our control. If there is a threat of more severe weather, the Highlander Half Marathon is dedicated to ensuring the safety of all participants, volunteers, and spectators. If race officials deem the course unsafe because of weather conditions, here’s what you need to know...

  • Race officials may cancel, delay, or change the event in case of extreme weather or other conditions that may affect the safety and health of participants.
  • The race can be delayed for a maximum of one hour from start time. If severe weather hasn’t cleared within one hour, the race will be canceled. The race director, in consultation with city and university law enforcement, fire/EMS, and other officials, will monitor the weather and make a decision if any action is necessary.
  • The race director may decide to shut down the course after the race has started if weather conditions deteriorate. Runners will be asked to take shelter at the closest aid station (there are 19 along the course) and wait for a shuttle to the finish line. The race will not resume. If you refuse to take shelter and continue, you do so at your own risk.
  • Volunteer course marshals will be released from their positions if the race is canceled.
  • Entry fees are nonrefundable. In the case of cancellation, we will offer a 50 percent discount to all participants for next year’s race. We are a non-profit organization operated by volunteers with a small administrative staff and proceeds are donated to our student-athlete scholarship fund.
