L'Etape California will feature the much of the same climb and roads the professional riders will race during the Amgen Tour of California's Queen Stage finishing at Mt. Baldy on Saturday, May 16. Two distances are offered and both showcase beautiful roads and a significant amount of climbing! Each ride will be fully supported with abundant mechanical/food stops and provide riders with the opportunity to cross the finish line at the Mt. Baldy summit.
During the event, participants will have the opportunity to ride with cycling legend and Amgen Tour of California ambassador Jens Voigt. All registered participants will receive a "Shut Up Baldy" t-shirt to commemorate the challenging day in the saddle.
The short course takes riders directly to the Mt. Baldy Ski Lifts and features 5,000 feet of elevation gain over a 13-mile climb. The long course option begins with a climb to Mt. Baldy Village and turns left onto the scenic Glendora Ridge and Glendora Mountain Roads. For 20 miles, riders will enjoy a rolling and twisting descent before reaching the City of Glendora and the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. After a traverse through the foothill communities, riders will tackle Mt. Baldy Road for a 2nd time. Upon reaching Mt. Baldy Village riders will push on towards the summit and the steepest part of the climb, averaging nearly 9% for the final 4.3 miles. At the finish line riders will have the opportunity to ride through the Amgen Tour of California finish line as photographers capture their moment of glory. All told, the riders will celebrate the achievement of gaining over 10,000 feet of elevation.
