Event Description
Booker T. Washington High School, the first black public high school built in Atlanta was constructed in the 1920s during the city's major school building program. It was, and still is, an important cultural institution in the black community. The school opened in 1924, 52 years after public education started in Atlanta. It remained the only black high school in the city until 1947.
The 1ST ANNUAL BULLDOG UNITY 5K RUN & /1Mile WALK will both start at the Lifting the Veil of Ignorance statue in front of Washington High School and proceed down historic streets named after Civil Rights icons such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Joseph Lowery Blvd., and James P. Brawley Dr. The 5K participants will pass 2 of the HBCU's of the Atlanta University Center as they approach the mile 2 water stop at M. Agnes Jones Elementary School before heading back to Washington High School. Expect rolling hills, as you are entertained and inspired along the route at this Inaugural event!
Your participation in this historical event will provide the students at Washington High the opportunity to have access to scholarships, educational field trips/college visits, SAT/ACT test prep, uniforms and you will participate in preserving of the Booker T. Washington High School legacy.
