Event Description

Escape the summer city heat and head for the mountains! Join us at Rocky Gap State Park in Flintstone, MD for the 17th Annual XTERRA EX2 Off-Road Triathlon and Duathlon.

The triathlon race course starts with a two lap swim in warm clear waters of a mountain lake and the duathlon starts with a three mile semi-technical trail run. After the first segment, all racers head out to complete two laps of a mountain bike course that includes twisty lakeside single-track, wide fire roads, smooth grassy sections, and a few ‘rock gardens’. Once completing the mountain bike course, racers transition to a 5 mile run that has rooty trails, smooth open flats, and one big climb. All in all, this course is super fun and has challenged thousands of newbies and seasoned vets over the years!

Event details and schedule

The XTERRA EX2 Off-Road Triathlon is one of the points series races held in the United States. Competitors earn points based on their finishing place. Racers use these points to vie for the title of XTERRA Regional Champion thus qualifying for the XTERRA World Championship held in Hawaii.

You are going to love this race venue! With its picture perfect beauty, fantastic amenities, large clear mountain lake, and challenging trail network, Rocky Gap State Park offers a stellar venue for this nationally recognized points series race. Rocky Gap has tons to do and is just a 2.5 hour drive from the Washington and Baltimore metro areas. You can make it a family weekend, with camping, a Jack Nicklaus golf course, awesome beaches, plenty of trails, and fishing – everyone will love it! Or you can make it a fun weekend getaway – there is a fancy lodge/casino on site and plenty of bed and breakfasts located right in Cumberland.

Team Relay Option

Each duathlon and triathlon relay team may be comprised of two or three racers. Each athlete on relay teams must complete at least one FULL segment of the race, either the .75 mile swim (Tri)/3 mile run (Du), 13 mile bike, or the 5 mile run. Racers will ‘tag’ each other at the bike rack where their bike is placed. For two person teams, one racer will have to complete two FULL segments and the other racer will only complete one segment.
