Event Description

World TB Day - Brief Summary of Event

World Tuberculosis Day is observed on March 24th each year to commemorate the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacillus that causes tuberculosis (TB).  It is designed to raise public awareness about the global epidemic of TB and efforts to eliminate this devastating disease.  Even today, TB kills more people in the world than any other infectious disease -- more than HIV and malaria!  In 2018, 10 million people fell ill with TB, and 1.5 million died from the disease -- mostly in low and middle-income countries.  This is very tragic given that there is curative treatment for active TB disease and preventative treatment for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), an inactive form which can become active when a person’s immune system becomes weak.  Although most people are unaware, approximately 13 million in the United states have LTBI.  Each year since 2016, the PCHD has utilized World TB Day as a time to renew our commitment to doing our part in building awareness of TB by providing education to Pima County’s residents, clinicians, healthcare agencies, and organizations that provide services to at-risk populations.
