The inaugural Escape Aquathlon will kick-off the 2020 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon weekend.
In celebration of 40 years of triathletes fearlessly making their Escape from Alcatraz, the Aquathlon is another way to experience the thrill of ESCAPE in 2020. Following the swim-run format, whether you are warming up for Sunday’s Triathlon or challenging yourself in a new way – the Dare to Escape starts in the water.
Staying true to the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon’s storied start, athletes will jump from a Hornblower boat to begin the 750m swim. The San Francisco Spirit will depart from San Francisco’s Pier 3, cruising past the Island to get into starting position. With swim advisors on board and water safety vessels hovering nearby, athletes can feel confident in taking that courageous leap off the boat.
Per ESCAPE tradition, the swim will finish just past the St. Francis Yacht Club. Athletes will jog off the beach to the run transition area at Little Marina Green. From here, they will trade wetsuits for running shoes and take off for the 5K run along the San Francisco Bay Trail, heading west toward Crissy Field to the Warming Hut before looping back to finish in the grass at Marina Green.
ESCAPE BACK-TO-BACK CHALLENGE
Do you have what it takes to make back-to-back ESCAPES? If you’re already signed up for the Triathlon, and want to test the waters and your limits, add the Aquathlon to your weekend ESCAPE plan.
To be eligible for the Back-to-Back Challenge designation, you must be signed up for the full Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon AND the Aquathlon.
All Escape Back-to-Back Challenge finishers will receive a specialty commemorative item, early check-in for the Triathlon, and be remembered as the first class of ESCAPEES to tackle this feat.

PACKET PICK-UP & ATHLETE MEETING – June 5th

Time: 5pm – 9pm
Aquathlon participants are required to pick up their race packets & t-shirt on Friday, June 5th
There will also be a mandatory athlete meeting to go over important race information for Saturday. Athletes can choose to attend of the following meeting times: 5:30pm, 6:30pm, 7:30pm, or 8:30pm.
