Event Description

The Summer Biathlon was created by a group of Winter Biathletes as a way to maintain their training during the warm season.  Our Summer Biathlon is the basic style which includes 3 running stages separated by 2 shooting bouts.  Participants are released from the startline in pairs seeded by their estimated 5K running time beginning with the fastest runners to minimize congestion at the shooting range.  The opening leg is 1500M.  Upon completion of that leg, the participant will  walk  a short distance to the shooting range and fire 5 shots in the prone (lying down) position with a .22 cal rifle attempting to hit 5 knock-down targets at 25 Yards.  After exiting the range, the 2000M leg is run and the participant will re-enter the range, this time shooting 5 shots from the standing position (same range/distance).  Upon completion of the second shooting bout, the participant will run the final 1500M leg to the finish line. Scoring the event is the gross time (start line to finish line, clock never stops) reduced by shooting skill.  Each prone target hit reduces time by :15, each standing target hit reduces time by :30.   A perfect "10" (we've seen a few) will reduce running time by 3 minutes 45 seconds.  Overall Male & Female awards are determined and removed from the age-group pool.
