Our Story

This is our 3rd year hosting this run in honor of our late son Jake. This is his story.

Jake and his twin brother Brady came into this world Thursday evening, August 21st, 2014. Brady came first, but when Jake followed, he became entangled in his umbilical cord and was not breathing when he was born. The CHOP transport team came and brought Jake into the city.

Upon arrival at CHOP, Jake was started on therapeutic hypothermia where he was actively cooled to decrease inflammation of his brain and prevent further damage. After continued testing and monitoring it was determined that Jake had suffered severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and his situation was described as "one of the worst they had ever seen" at CHOP.  Due to the severe nature of Jake's condition we quickly arranged for him to be baptized and he spent Friday evening with those who loved him. Jake's final moments on Earth were spent with his family. He passed away peacefully in the arms of his mommy early morning on Saturday, August 23rd 2014. Jake was with us for one day but has forever changed our lives.

All proceeds for this race will go to the Jake Thomas Freeman Memorial Fund at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to advance research for HIE.
