ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT EVERY BREATH COUNTS

Event Purpose: Every Breath Counts will serve to highlight community-wide awareness and education for patients, families, and caregivers about living with COPD. Focus will be on awareness, education and early detection.  This will enable the community to acquire better self-management skills and aid in the reduction and severity of exacerbations, prevent hospitalizations, reduce emergency department visits and, most importantly, improve health-related quality of life. Through Southeastern Health Foundation Grant Funds, interactive educational devices such as pulse oximeters, all-in-one COPD resource pocket guides, as well as Empathy Lung Simulators, and Bio Quest Inflatable Lung Comparison Kits will be purchased.  Funds raised from this year's event will go towards expanding education for COPD awareness. Included, but not limited to, are ipads for virtual educational opportunities for patients and caregivers, a Spirometry System, Incentive Spirometers, Spacer Masks, and Acapella Devices.
Goal: Our event goals are to have a successful Virtual 5K Run & Awareness Walk-a-Thon, saturate our community with awareness information via health messaging and have multiple informational events, once COVID restrictions are lifted. These events will be held at the Community Health Education Center (CHEC) and Southeastern Lifestyle Fitness Center Lumberton, giving COPD Awareness the same level of support and effort we give all major health observances (i.e. Breast Cancer, Diabetes Awareness, Heart Health Awareness, etc.). Our hope is that Every Breath Counts will continue to be an annual community event. Our fundraising efforts last year provided the opportunity to offer Pulmonary Rehabilitation Scholarships to multiple people who were unable to afford the program, which made a positive impact in their treatment of COPD.
