Event Description

Dear Friends,

Welcome to another attempt to host one of our area's favorite winter races...during a global pandemic.  Let us start out by sending our collective support to those who have lost loved-ones or have been affected by the virus in a negative way.  We're with you.  And although this thing seems to be hanging around for a very long time, we WILL get through this.

This year marks the 38th running of the Kuyahoora Kicker Running Club's fabled Beer and Chili Run/ Walk.  The 2022 Beer and Chili will be an attempt to bring back at least part of the normal event.  We WILL host a live run/walk, however, we will NOT be hosting our after-party in the Masonic Temple. Below are two possible race plans. If COVID behaves itself, we will stick to Plan A!

Here is a summary of "Plan A":

-8:30 "Day of" registration begins at the Village Fountain on Bridge Street in Newport.  Those pre-registered are still encouraged to check in.  Shirt pickup will also be available.  Look for Dan's green truck and the Kuyahoora Kicker Banner.

***NOTICE- WE WILL NOT BE USING THE MASONIC TEMPLE THIS YEAR.**

        - The Run/Walk will begin at 10:00.  Walkers, 5K runners and 10K runners will all launch at once from the bridge.  If you have medical concerns related to COVID or do not feel comfortable in a small crowd, please feel free to start a little earlier or a little later.  Our event isn't really a race, so who cares.

-Our famous "water" station will be located at the 5K turn around.  Expect friendly service and quenching treats.

-For those on the speedy side, medals will be given to the top male and female in the 5K and 10K.

Well, that describes the run.  But what about the Beer and Chili

We're pretty sure our runners will be eager to get out of the cold.  We strongly encourage our participants to visit one of our three "marquee" sponsors.  The Alamo (Poland), Dibble's Inn (Middleville), and the Newport Town Tavern will be happy to "wet your whistle".  Good eats too!

For those warm and hearty runners who want to stick around, we're convinced you'll find a way to celebrate, post-run.  Got a favorite chili recipe?  Cook it up and bring it with you.  Drop that tailgate, crack open a can, and share with your friends.   We'll be outside.  We'll be spaced apart.  So why not?  No, it's not the same as our normal party, but hey, you runners know how to have a good time.

Long sleeve cotton Beer and Chili shirts will be available for purchase through RunSignUp.  ***We can guarantee delivery of these shirts on the day of the event only The cost breakdown is as follows:   $15 to participate if you don't want the shirt, around $35 if you do want the shirt. Again, just be sure you're signed up using RunSignUp by January 23rd.***. No shirts will be ordered after the event.

All this seems like a reasonable plan so far, right?    Here's the thing (and we all know it)- "Plan A" can disappear in a flash.  If COVID numbers in our area force restrictions to be put in place, that will change things for us- making it impossible to gather on February 5th.

So here is what "Plan B" looks like:

If we are in the middle of the registration period and state mandates suddenly prohibit hosting an outdoor event like the one described above, the Beer and Chili will transform into a Virtual Event.  Please understand, we cannot refund money that has been paid to register.  What we can do is assure you that every penny we can spare will go to help two of our local food pantries.  This has been the case for years and years and will continue to be the case.  In fact, last year using the Virtual concept, we were able to raise around $8000.  This is a credit to the very generous running community that exists in our area, along with our awesome local sponsors.

If you have ordered a shirt and our event gets shut down?  You will be contacted via email.  We are hoping arrangements can be made to pick up shirts at the Sneaker Store or at one of the bars mentioned above.  AGAIN- THIS APPLIES TO PLAN B ONLY.

As we move forward, we ask for your patience.  We're doing the best we can to keep this simple, fun and safe while still helping out a worthy cause.  Our fingers are crossed!

Stay safe, stay strong,

Dan Capron and Terry Fellows (co-directors of the Beer and Chili) and the Kuyahoora Kickers Running Club
