Event Description

Hosted by the Windsor Locks High School National Honor Society, all proceeds from this race go directly to the Windsor Locks Special Olympics Sports Stars! In lieu of the canceled fundraisers hosted by the Sports Stars for the 2021 season, this fundraiser is a Covid-friendly and socially distant way to raise money!

Windsor Locks Special Olympics is a year-round program that provides sports training and competition opportunities for persons with special needs. WL Special Olympics is now in its 25 th year. It has grown tremendously over the years both in the number of participants and the program we offer. We offer year-round programs –track/field and cycling in the spring, croquet and bocce in the summer, basketball and bowling in the fall, floor hockey in the winter, and a unified fitness club all year long. All our programs are unified. We have close to 40 athletes and equally as many unified partners, ages 8 and up, who participate. A unified partner is a non-disabled person who is paired with a person(s) with disabilities to train and compete together as a team. Through the unified experience, athletes have the opportunity to improve their sports/athletic skills, communication, and behavioral/social skills and develop friendships through their interaction with their partner(s). For each of the 4 seasons participants train/practice for 10-12 weeks and compete in a divisioning/time trial and state games competitions.

Our Windsor Locks Special Olympic program relies on our fundraising efforts to fund our year-round programming. Our program was recognized as an Outstanding Local Program at an Annual Connecticut State Special Olympic Awards night.
